Oak Grove’s noted fine-arts program provides the tools
and guidance for sophisticated artistic discovery, expression
and understanding. The fine and practical arts are an essential
aspect of an Oak Grove education, supporting creative thinking,
critical thinking and communication skills as well as global
awareness, language arts and mathematics.
Beginning in early childhood, the arts are integrated into
the curriculum through the gentle discovery of drawing, painting,
movement, nature, woodworking ceramics, singing and rhythm.
Elementary and junior high school students supplement academic
courses with biweekly specialist-led study of art, music and
drama. Drawing, print-making, painting, woodworking, computer
graphics, ceramics, photography, Orff-Schulwerk, instrumental
and vocal music and dramatic arts are a few of the courses
available. Many of these classes are headquartered in the
school's beautiful arts building and studio workshop, utilizing
the growing equipment and technological resources available
at the school. Facilities includes a fully functioning recording
studio, photography lab and darkroom, weaving and textile
workshop, an on-site kiln, and supervised portfolio preparation
for art college applicants.
High school students can take advantage of a new, state-of-the-art
computer lab to edit and produce videos, compose music and
design individual web pages. A full-year elective in digital
filmmaking program merges arts and technology as students
learn film production and techniques, film history and appreciation,
and collaborate on filmmaking projects. Many elect to find
artistic inspiration and learning opportunities nationally
and internationally. Recent examples include the Art While
Enjoying Some of our Majestic Environment (AWESOME) Art Project,
which combined art and outdoor education. Students traveled
to various California landscapes for overnight adventures
and shared their interpretations through photography, sculpture
and a gallery exhibit. A recent trip to Italy over spring
break offered learning opportunities across the curriculum,
which included in-depth study of Italian language, culture
and art. To see our online Student Gallery, click here.
