At Oak Grove, we consider ourselves a private school with a public purpose and our highest purpose is to educate young people to really make a difference in the world. Not through feeding ambition and the outward signs of success – money or fame – but by teaching students to pay attention, to really attend, with affection to the truth of things, and through that careful attention, allow right action to follow. This is a school that asks our students to question “life as usual” and dare to live differently because change we must if we are going to have a future worth living. Krishnamurti once said, “A real school through its students should bring a blessing to the world.” So our ultimate aim is to do just that – educate students in such a way that they bring a blessing to the world.
Oak Grove School is also committed as an institution to continuously exploring ways to minimize our environmental impact on the planet and also to reduce suffering in the world. We are a vegetarian campus – one of the very few schools in the nation to undertake this commitment – and we maintain an organic garden for produce which helps supplement our Vegetarian Hot Lunch Program. We encourage students to ride their bikes to school when it is feasible to do so. We educate students in “leave no trace” backpacking and camping practices, and much of our curriculum is designed to allow for the active exploration of living more simply on the planet.
