For our International students Oak Grove offers a highly selective ESL Immersion Program to motivated students with intermediate English proficiency. The goal of the ESL program is to give students competence in spoken and written English, enabling them to freely express themselves in the school and in the community and to complete college preparatory academic work. The program encourages communication and the development of friendly relationships between students of different cultures and backgrounds. No more than two or three students speak the same native language to encourage English as the only language spoken. The multi-cultural environment creates an exciting learning experience.

The program is based on the concept of “immersion” as the quickest way to develop English fluency. ESL students are placed in mainstream classes alongside students who are native English speakers so that they acquire speaking and listening skills immediately. While other students take Spanish, ESL students take ESL support classes which enable them to receive assistance in their academic work as well as get specific help with language acquisition. ESL students also fully participate in visual and performing arts, sports, and outdoor education and travel alongside native speakers.
