Spanish
The goals of the Spanish program are mastery of the language and an in-depth understanding and appreciation for the diversity and richness of Hispanic culture. The language program is based both on Total Physical Response (TPR) and grammar-literacy methods of second language acquisition. The program is modeled on the natural steps of native language learning and involves both student centered projects and teacher directed activities. Students at all levels study Hispanic music, art, film, literature, history and contemporary affairs.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
The goal of the ESL program is to give students competence in spoken and written English, enabling them to freely express themselves in the school and in the community and to complete academic work. The program encourages communication and the development of friendly relationships between students of different cultures and backgrounds. The program is based on the concept of “immersion” as the quickest way to develop English fluency. ESL students are placed in mainstream classes alongside students who are native English speakers so that they acquire speaking and listening skills immediately. While other students take Spanish, ESL students take ESL support classes which enable them to receive assistance in their academic work as well as get specific help with language acquisition. ESL students also fully participate in all other aspects of the program (art, music, drama, physical education, camping, travel, advisory) alongside native speakers.
